North West Highlands
North West Highlands of Scotland
The North West Highlands of Scotland is the most remote, rural area of mainland Scotland, and Great Britain. Most appreciated for its natural beauty. The town of Fort William and the city of Inverness border between the North West Highlands and the Cairngorm Mountains, where the Caledonian canal travels from Loch Linnhe in the East, via Loch Ness and out to the Moray Firth, at Inverness. The area to the North West, is the remote North West highlands of Scotland.
Today the North West Highlands is increasingly more accessible with an increasing number of people enjoying living, working and visiting the region. The landscape of the Scottish highlands is dominated by steep mountains, lochs and glens, and miles of dramatic and unspoilt coastline. Further North there is a landscape of bogs and lochans and some major peaks. This area is largely unspoilt with access often only viable by narrow single track roads. In the West the climate is relatively mild compared with the rest of Scotland and especially at coastal and sea level locations. There are many islands lying off the coast, which vary greatly too.
This vastly unspoilt region offers a wealth of outdoor activities and sites of cultural and historic interest. It is an ideal destination for an adventure holiday and much sought after by outdoor enthusiasts, with great mountain ranges including the spectacularly scenic Torridon mountains. Equally it is an ideal destination for a true get away from it all relaxing break. There are many picturesque remote fishing villages and pretty coastal towns scattered throughout, including Plockton, Applecross and Ullapool, where visitors can enjoy the local seafood and touring the surrounding highland scenery.
