The South of France
The South of France, locally known as “le Midi”, is loosely defined as the regions of France which lie along the south coast of France, bordering the Mediterranean sea and Italy. The climate in these regions is fantastic, due to its southerly latitude, and this makes for the perfect holiday destination for those looking for sun without going too far away.Some of the most popular tourist areas in the south of France are the French Riviera, which includes the towns of St. Tropez and Cannes, and Biarritz, which is one of the best resorts in France. These are the perfect places to go for a nice relaxing holiday in the sun. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to do in this stunning area, from water sports like jet skiing, sailing and surfing, to walking and cycling in the foothills of the southern Alps.
Cote d'Azur, Provence and the Camargue
There is a huge range of excellent resorts and towns along the Cote d'Azur, including cities such as Nice and St Tropez. The area is perfect for sun, sand, sea and shopping, with some of the resorts attracting celebrities and important people from all over the world.
Nimes and Montpellier
Further inland, the areas around Nimes and Montpellier are very popular among tourists wishing to see more of mainland France while still maintaining the great weather and temperature associated with the South of France. Towns like Nimes and Montpellier themselves are very popular, but there are many other attractions and towns in the area worth seeing.
The Bambouseraie
The Bambouseraie is a huge forest composed entirely of Bamboo plants which give a very eerie yet calm feel. It was founded in 1855 and has become the main centre for for the study and preservation of exotic species in France.
Cirque de Navacelles
This giant oxbox canyon near the town of Navacelles is a fantastic day out for the whole family. It cuts deeply through the Upper Herault Plain, and the stunning vistas both of and from it are second to none. Worth a visit if you are interested in climbing, walking and hiking thanks to the rugged terrain.
