About Portmahomack
Portmahomack is on the east coast, about 45 minutes north of Inverness. It sits in a sheltered bay on the Dornoch Firth and it is known as the only village in Scotland which is on the east coast but which faces west over the water! So we get lots of great sunset views over the water year round – hence the name!
Portmahomack has a pub (Castle Hotel) and several places for eating out including the well known Oyster Catcher Restaurant.
It’s a great place to come to unwind and relax, but there’s plenty of things to do for the more energetic – eg golf, water sports, swimming pool (in Tain), walking, cycling, childrens playparks.
Many visitors like to explore the wider area, and places to visit nearby include the lovely town of Dornoch, Tain, Cromarty (reachable by Nigg-Cromarty ferry in the summer), dolphin watching (especially good on the Black Isle, where you can also take a boat), the distillery Visitor Centres at Glen Morangie and Balblair; the Anta pottery and design studio, and several other places within easy reach. Not forgetting in the village itself the Discovery Centre which celebrates Portmahomack’s past, including its place as one of the main Pictish archaeology sites in the country. Further afield you can easily do a day trip to the west coast or up to the north coast, even to Orkney.
We can’t promise you sun but it is true to say that because of our location, Portmahomack is one of the driest and sunniest places in the country.
In summary, Sunset View Cottage gives you a bit of luxury, whether you are a couple, a group, or a family - a wonderful house in a fantastic setting.
